![]() ![]() Rarely does a title seem to find that balance between easy and hard and make it work so well, yet A Story About My Uncle manages it. It’s challenging at times without being infuriating – a quality that many games lack. There are the odd puzzles that you won’t run through as quickly as you would first think, but after a few attempts you’ll suddenly realise what you must do. ![]() ![]() In the same way that the Portal games were very trial and error, A Story About My Uncle will have you scratching your head at points, but it’s unlikely you will be stuck for hours figuring out what to do. The level structure is well thought out, intricate and challenging. While she does help out, she isn’t your saving grace it is still down to you to get to the end of your journey. ![]() Maddie’s character is excellent – as well as being witty and intelligent, she keeps the youthful innocence alive within this world. It’s a nice approach instead of the usual dialogue and provides a bit of charm to this already powerful game, and because there is no direct dialogue between the characters, you don’t know exactly what was said. Instead, the game uses narration – you telling your daughter the story. While she talks directly to you, you don’t respond directly. Along your way, you will encounter an alien, a young girl by the name of Maddie, who teaches you information about where you are and offers to help you find your missing uncle. It is up to you to find your uncle, who has gone missing from his house. It begins with your character talking to his daughter and telling her a bedtime story about the wild adventures he shared with his Uncle Fred, a researcher and scientist who travelled all over the world collecting data. The creators have made a game that not only plays well and challenges the mind, but which looks fantastic and keeps you interested throughout, both in the visuals and gameplay. I understand that’s how this game works, but it became frustrating after a while.A Story About My Uncle is a first-person platforming game created by developers Gone North Games, and what a treat it is. If grappling then rocket booting didn’t work on this section, it may have been because I grappled to the wrong things or didn’t use the rocket boots at the right time or a large number of things, and while the checkpoint system is a big help, I would still end up falling multiple times before I figured out what needed to be done. In many of the later areas of the game, it boils down to trial and error. While there were times the platforming was brilliant and satisfying, there were a few problems I had with it. It fits well with the overall feel of the game, and kept me playing just to see what was happening. The story itself is a charming, child-friendly tale that anyone can enjoy. While the character models and animations are a little bland, the world itself is very colorful, and looks pretty impressive while rocketing through the air and grappling to floating rocks. The grapple has a limited amount of uses before the player must land on a level surface, so it will take some strategy and finesse to make it. All of this combines with the main mechanic, an electric grappling hook that can pull the player towards whatever they shot at. Players use the suit’s powers to run, jump stories high and even equip some rocket boots later on for an even bigger boost. The game is a platformer in every sense of the word. In order to find his uncle, he must use a special adventuring suit his uncle invented to reach the far corners of this world. This one particular adventure sends him to an unknown world populated by some humanoid salamander kind of people that live on a series of floating rocks and platforms. He talks of his inventor uncle, and the many adventures he went on with him. The story is told through the narration of a father telling a bedtime story to his child. After playing it, I can see the ideas Gone North Games had were sound, but some issues stood out a little too much for me. Of course, I was first semi-joking when I heard the title, and after seeing some screenshots of the game, I was intrigued. I had never heard of A Story About My Uncle up until about a week before its release. ![]()
